SCADA virtualisation project for Haminan Sähköverkko Oy
Haminan Sähköverkko Oy is a subsidiary of Haminan Energia, which takes care of the transmission of electricity in the city centre area of Hamina. The company invests in good network planning, construction and maintenance in order to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply.
Challenges and objectives
The IT reform of the Haminan Sähköverkko network was based on a concrete and critical need. The SCADA system that was in use had reached the end of its lifecycle and no longer met the requirements of modern operations. The system had become technically outdated, its maintenance had become more difficult, and its compatibility with new solutions had deteriorated. This created significant risks, especially from the perspectives of operational reliability, information security and continuity. The reform was considered to be necessary so that the electricity network infrastructure can be managed reliably and efficiently in the future.
However, a simple update of the software was not a sufficient solution, as the underlying hardware also required an upgrade. The old hardware limited the performance and scalability of the system, and it no longer supported modern monitoring and automation functions. The objective of the hardware upgrade was to improve the system stability, speed, and capacity, and to ensure that the new SCADA solution could be fully implemented without any technical compromises.
Save LAN solution
Save LAN offered Haminan Sähköverkko Oy a SCADA virtualisation project, the aim of which was to renew the control and automation environment used for monitoring the electricity network to meet today's requirements.
In the project, the existing SCADA system was migrated to a new hardware platform and built upon an Oracle Linux-based virtualisation environment. The upgrade significantly improved the system's operational reliability, manageability, and lifecycle sustainability, and reduced hardware dependency in a critical production environment.
Project implementation
The virtualisation solution provides a stable and secure platform for running critical systems. At the same time, it enables the efficient use of resources, better fault tolerance, and flexible scaling to meet the future needs of the electricity network. The new environment facilitates system maintenance and further development in line with the growing demands of the electricity network.
As part of the project, integrations were implemented into the SCADA system with the Trimble NIS network information system. Thanks to the integrations, real-time monitoring data and network information are seamlessly combined, which improves the situational picture, makes fault management more efficient, and supports the operational operations and planning of the electricity network.
“Our own resources and expertise were limited. With a service agreement, you can use Save LAN's expertise to support your own organisation.”
Project results
As a result of the project, Haminan Sähköverkko Oy received a modern, integrated and scalable SCADA solution that supports reliable monitoring and development of the electricity network far into the future. The continuous operational reliability of the system is ensured by a service agreement signed with Save LAN Oy, which covers system maintenance and support for the following three years after the project is completed.
