Nematron® system
We are developing an intelligent Nematron® system for fault management and predictive maintenance for electricity grid companies
Snow and ice on power lines costs electricity distribution companies in Finland and other snowy countries millions in maintenance costs every year.
The snow load will topple the electric poles due to excessive load and cause the wires to stretch almost to the ground. This can lead to power cuts or even personal injury. In snowy areas, companies have to monitor the load situation and drive thousands of kilometres off-road every year.
We are replacing the need to walk on the ground with smart and cost-effective technical solutions. The Nematron® system eliminates snow and ice problems in the power grid and cancels out storm surges before snow and ice cause distribution problems.
The NEMATRON® system eliminates the need for mechanical de-icing and snow removal by humans as a preventive measure. This means cost savings in labour costs and equipment. The system will reduce the need for inspection flights. Our solution also reduces the time spent on monitoring and maintenance. There are no cost-effective solutions commercially available for automated snow and ice removal.

Nematron® prototype
Save LAN has developed a field-ready prototype of the Nematron® device. The device has been developed in collaboration with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the IoT Paja Foundation since 2021. The device combines intelligent sensing and vibration-based snowfall logic. The equipment is connected to the Nematron® system, a so-called cloud service, via IoT connection.
Field tests of the Nematron® device were carried out in TLS Verkko Oy's electricity network in early 2023.TLS Verkko Oy is a network company in Lapland, whose area of operation extends from Tornio to Ylläs and follows the Tornion river bend. The equipment was connected to a 45 kV overhead line. The tests gave reliable results.
The Nematron® device obtains its energy from a directly connected phase conductor by induction. In this way we can guarantee that the device has sufficient energy in all situations. This also allows for a long lifetime of the device, as it does not use battery technology.
Nematron® cloud service
The software has a built-in web-based user interface. This interface makes it easy to produce information in a visual format. The system also provides an up-to-date list of devices in error. The map view makes it easy to keep track of the overall situation. The cloud service also provides an interface with the IEC60870-104 protocol. This allows us to transmit the data to the SCADA system and via that to the DMS systems.
The complete system supports rapid fault management and maintenance of electricity networks, and guides operational activities. The system provides situational awareness of the terrain, allowing resources to be allocated to the right places, at the right time, saving money.
